Womxn's march denver position statements
Statement on COVID-19 (March 2020):
Womxn’s March Denver stands together with folks experiencing hardship in these challenging times. Consider that womxn hold 76% of all healthcare jobs in our nation and are a lifeline for patients in isolation (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 2019). Womxn also take on the majority of child care, eldercare and domestic responsibilities that put them further in front of outbreaks such as these. In the U.S., for example, more than 25 million womxn — almost 1 in 7 — provide care to family members or friends, according to the National Partnership for Women and Families. Yet, less than 10% of womxn are on the Coronavirus Task Force. Representation matters.
Womxn’s March Denver acknowledges those experiencing hardships caused by COVID-19. As we adjust to the ‘next normal’ of defensive measures and social distancing, advocating for our community matters more now than ever—even if it is from afar.
We recognize that Black, Brown and Indigenous communities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Systemic and structural oppression has benefited white populations and has become increasingly apparent during this crisis. We ask you to contribute to relief efforts however you are able, whether through donations to community food banks, health agencies who need medical supplies or by financially giving to organizations that support womxn, girls, and their families.
While it’s disappointing that our country lacks unifying, inclusive and inspiring leadership, delays in the national response to the outbreak have exposed huge flaws and inequities in our nation's social safety net that have been downplayed and ignored for far too long. The lack of widespread access to resources, from coronavirus testing to affordable health care to paid sick days and family leave, are critical reminders of why it matters who is in charge at a time like this. We need representatives who recognize that our Constitution mandates a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Let us remember that Our Vote is Our Voice and the clock is ticking on important changes that still need to be made to emerge from this crisis stronger and even more committed to the movement to end sexism, oppression, and injustice.

Voting Rights: Womxn’s March Denver is confident that until we address the serious inequality of voter rights in our country, democracy will never be reached. Voter suppression continues as people of color and womxn lack the same access as any other group. It keeps getting harder and harder for those voices to be counted due to systemic oppression. Local elections are as important as national elections: city councils and district attorneys make decisions that impact everyday life. When we advocate for each other, we win together. Our VOTE is our VOICE and is essential to reaching true democracy.
Gun Safety: Womxn’s March Denver supports appropriate gun safety laws in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling establishing individual ownership of firearms as a right under the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. With that being said, Womxn’s March Denver also recognizes that gun violence impacts a disproportionate number of womxn and girls annually. Research has shown that approximately 4.5 million womxn alive today have been threatened by intimate partners with firearms and 1 million have actually been shot by their abusers. An estimated 3 million American children are exposed to gun violence every year. We recognize the perception of gun violence disproportionately impacts racial and ethnic minority communities. It does not have to be this way.
We believe in 1) Legislation to ban the manufacture, sale, transfer and ownership for civilian use of assault weapons. 2) Comprehensive and universal background checks for all gun purchases to inclu8de private sales to keep guns out of the hands of felons, persons with mental illness who have been determined to pose a threat to themselves or others, persons convicted of domestic violence, persons under restraining orders, and persons with substance abuse disorders. 3) Supporting red flag laws that allow a judge to temporarily remove a firearm if someone has been deemed to be a threat to themselves or others. 4) Supporting child access prevention laws that would hold firearms owners accountable for the safe storage of firearms. 5) We believe in licensing requirements for firearms ownership that require proof of satisfactory completion of firearms safety courses.
Immigration: Womxn’s March Denver supports the pursuit of asylum and refugee status and the decriminalization of our immigrant friends, families, coworkers and neighbors. The state of Colorado is home to over 550,000 immigrants. In the past three years, the federal government has escalated the detention and deportation of thousands of immigrants, fragmenting cross-status families and causing lasting trauma when tearing innocent children from their parents and placing them in cages.
The ICE detention facility in Aurora holds more than 1,500 people with one full-time doctor and has been the focus of numerous investigations, lawsuits, and reports of medical neglect and abuse. The U.S. Constitution guarantees the fundamental rights of equal protection to every person in this country, regardless of their immigration status, and yet womxn in the Aurora facility are denied basic human dignity, access to medical care, or basic hygiene products like soap. Defying the 1951 Refugee Convention, thousands of womxn and children arrive at the U.S. Mexico border seeking asylum from persecution in their native countries and are either forced to pursue their claims in Mexico or are detained indefinitely. Every person in this country deserves dignity, respect and safety.
Reproductive Rights: Womxn’s March Denver is dedicated to advancing reproductive rights and supports the promotion, protection and fulfilment of sexual and reproductive health. Sexual and reproductive health is a basic human right and thus entitles reproductive healthcare services, goods and facilities that are: available in adequate numbers; accessible physically and economically; accessible without discrimination; and of good quality. Sexual autonomy and reproductive agency is central to life, well-being and dignity. We believe access to abortion is a healthcare service and healthcare providers have the right to provide services to patients in a safe, private, and judgement free environment.
Climate Change: Womxn’s March Denver believes that we are in a crisis called climate change. We believe science is conclusive and that if we do not change our ways, we are dooming ourselves and future generations. We support fearless leaders who take action to make radical changes for the better. We know other things can be reversed over time, but destroying our planet cannot. There is no Planet B, so we will continue to educate our communities on how we can save the Planet we have.
Domestic Violence: Womxn’s March Denver recognizes the right of all individuals to live free of violence, fear, and manipulation in the world and at home. Thus, we condemn domestic violence (DV) and all forms of violence. We know that those who experience DV are disproportionately members of non-dominant identity groups and that to support survivors and eliminate DV we must address the systemic oppression that makes these communities more likely to encounter violence. We are committed to elevating the work of organizations that support survivors and offer anti-violence education. We trust survivors of DV to understand the severity and complexities of their own unique situations. Likewise, we understand that “just leaving” is not always the solution. We believe survivors and are dedicated to amplifying their voices to ensure they receive the support they need and truly want.

Statement on the Impeachment (2019): When the office of the Presidency is used to undermine the very democracy we cherish, “liberty and justice” are lost. We are at an historic crossroads with a man in the Oval Office who is willing to trample the constitution and use the powers of his office for personal and political gain. This is exactly what the founders feared. It is an abuse of power and a threat to liberty. Womxn’s March Denver fully supports the impeachment proceedings and stands with the House of Representative as they exercise their constitutional obligation to pursue truth. We implore members of the Senate to defend our constitution and our democratic process. Trump must be impeached and removed from office.
Statement Against the Prior Anti-Semitism of the National Womxn's March (2018): Womxn's March Denver denounces anti-Semitism and the National Women's March leadership team’s failure to promptly disassociate from anti-Semitic public figures. We proudly support our Jewish sisters and brothers. We condemn all language and actions of hate directed at the Jewish community.
Womxn's March Denver is an independent volunteer grassroots team of local Colorado women. We are not affiliated with the national Women’s March organization. We oppose all forms of oppression and operate from an intersectional lens. We stand in solidarity with all marginalized communities and ask that those communities stand together with us against oppression in all its forms.
